| Spot 1 | Horgabost, Isle of Harris |
||||
| Description | A
superb semi-official site on the machair (dunes)
overlooking an idyllic beach and the Island of Taransay (the
"Castaway" island), run by the local crofters.
Great, safe swimming off the beach. You may meet a fair number of other vans, tents and even caravans here, but there's plenty of room for all. |
||||
| Cost | Not much! | ||||
Facilities |
Public toilets with drinking water tap at car park a short walk from the beach - not provided as part of the site.
| Spot 2 | Luskentyre (Loisgaintir), Isle of Harris |
||||
| Description | Another
site on the machair (dunes) just befoe you get to the
croft houses. This is not a busy place and there's plenty
of space. Just park up on the grass and one of the
crofters may wander up and ask for a £ or 2 for camping.
Don't begrudge them the money - there's not much to be
made from crofting up there these days. Sunset views over the bay are particularly fine. |
||||
| Cost | Not much! | ||||
Facilities |
None - but you can get water at the croft
| Spot 3 | Tolsta (Tolastadh), Isle of Lewis |
||||
| Description | Park
at the public beach car park - fantastic beach and cliff
walks on hand - good for kite flying. Also very handy if
you've just got off the evening ferry. The walk north along the clifftop is really special - look out for whales, dolphins etc, and a spectacular promontory fort. |
||||
| Cost | Free | ||||
Facilities |
Public toilet - no drinking water.
| Spot 4 | Valtos (Bhaltos), Isle of Lewis |
||||
| Description | An
official site on the machair (dunes) overlooking the
beach and the island of Pabbay, near Valtos village.
Another site run by the local crofters. There are some
steep, windy roads leading to the beach - a good test for
any Type 2! There's plenty of room and the site will hold a number of people without everyone stepping on each other's toes. Be sure to drive atrip further down to Uig sands, through Glen Valtos. |
||||
| Cost | A few £'s | ||||
Facilities |
Toilet with drinking water and (I think) showers
| Spot 5 | Butt of Lewis, Isle of Lewis |
||||
| Description | Well
known to doyens of the shipping forecast! The most
northerly point on the Island of Lewis boasts an
impressive lighthouse and some wild seas. There are
numerous spots along the road near the lighthouse - we
parked up just above a little jetty at Port Stoth. The evening views on a sunny June night are breathtaking. Also look out for wildlife - seals, whales, dolphins and plenty of gannets. Kite flying is a must as this is an exposed site! |
||||
| Cost | Free | ||||
Facilities |
None | ||||
| Spot 6 |
Achnahaird, Wester Ross |
||||
| Description | One of our all time favourites! This informal site has one of the best views on any British site overlooking Stac Pollaidh, Suilven and others. It's great for hillwalking (Assynt) sea kayaking (Summer Isles) and rock climbing - Reiff is only 5 minutes away. Plus there are good beaches a short walk away. |
||||
| Cost | £6 for van with 2 people | ||||
Facilities |
Toilets, rubbish and water
| Spot 7 |
Sheigra, NW Sutherland |
||||
| Description |
